Why a four-year degree?

I decided to enrol in the four-year degree of Logistics and Supply Chain Management with RMIT (by then I had finally got married and pregnant with my first child---my mother was very pleased as you can imagine!). Studying and at the same time looking after a child was quite challenging. But I enjoyed it so much! I was grateful for the choices I had in being able to choose what I want to do with my future. One of the most enjoyable things is to interact with those highly intelligent people (teachers, fellow students and guest speakers from the industry), to learn and to get inspired.

I had worked for an exporting company in China for about a year before I came to Australia. The experience of working in an order management role sparked my interest to explore more of the logistics and supply chain world. The "sandwich" year RMIT offered with the 4-year program is one of the major reason I chose to enrol---After being knocked back with numerous job applications due to lack of "local experience" in business, I realized the standard degree might not be enough. I needed the co-op year to be able to get my foot in the door.

My feeling now is that my decision was right---I could not possibly imagine jumping into the corporate world straight from uni without having been well trained and prepared for it which the co-op year provides. This is especially true for somone like me, who comes from a completely different culture and language background. I will share my learning experience at Ericsson Australia with you in the following blog articles.
